About Palaui Island

Palaui Island is a protected landscape and seascape in the municipality of Santa Ana, Cagayan. It is famous for its pristine beaches, the historic Cape Engaño Lighthouse, and its appearance in international media — the island was featured in the 2015 season of "The Amazing Race." The island has no electricity or permanent residents (only caretakers). It offers a true off-grid tropical island experience.

How to reach

Palaui Island is reached by boat from Santa Ana Port (₱2,000–3,000 round trip, 30 min). Boats can be arranged at the port.

Walking and hiking. No vehicles on the island.

Things to do

  • Cape Engaño Lighthouse — A Spanish-era lighthouse built in 1892 on a hill at the northern tip of the island. The 30-minute hike to the lighthouse offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the Babuyan Islands. Entry ₱50.

  • Anguib Beach — A stunning white-sand beach on the eastern side of the island, with turquoise water and coconut palms.

  • Palaui Lagoon — A mangrove-fringed lagoon near the shore.

  • Crocodile Beach — A remote beach on the western side.

  • Hike to Cape Engaño — The 1.5-km trail from the landing beach to the lighthouse passes through secondary forest. Takes about 30–40 min one way.

  • Swim at Anguib Beach — The best swimming beach on the island.

  • Snorkel — Coral reefs off the eastern coast.

  • Camp overnight — Camping allowed at Anguib Beach (register at the Santa Ana LGU, ₱200–500 camping fee).
