Why visit Piribebuy?

Piribebuy is a historic town in Cordillera department, known for its role in the Triple Alliance War, when it served as the provisional capital of Paraguay after the fall of Asunción in 1869. The town was sacked and burned by Allied forces. Today it is a quiet agricultural and artisan centre, famous for its leatherwork (guampa and termo holders for tereré) and chipa cheese bread. The climate is subtropical; best visited May–September.

Piribebuy is on Route PY02, about 70 km east of Asunción (1 hr 15 min). Buses from Asunción run every 30 min (GS.8,000–12,000).
