Eusebio Ayala
Cordillera, Paraguay
Why visit Eusebio Ayala?
Eusebio Ayala is a town and district in Cordillera department, founded in 1770 by governor Carlos Morphi under the name "Barrero Grande," by which it is still commonly known locally. It is named after Eusebio Ayala (1875–1942), a Paraguayan Liberal Party politician born nearby who served as president from 1921–1923 and again 1932–1936, leading Paraguay through its victory in the Chaco War against Bolivia before being overthrown in 1936. The town is known as the birthplace of chipa barrero, a variety of Paraguay's traditional cheese bread, and sits next to the Acosta Ñu battlefield, site of the last major engagement of the Paraguayan War (1864–1870) — infamous for the Paraguayan army's desperate deployment of child, elderly, and wounded soldiers against a much larger Brazilian-Argentine force. The climate is subtropical; best visited May–September.
