Kiriwina
Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea
Why visit Kiriwina?
Kiriwina is the largest island in the Trobriand Islands group (the "Trobriands"), located in Milne Bay Province roughly 200 km north of Alotau. It is the cultural and administrative heart of the Trobriand Islands, famous worldwide through the anthropological work of Bronisław Malinowski, who documented the Kula ring trade system, yam cultivation cycles, and Trobriand sexual customs in the early 20th century.
The island is about 40 km long and flat, with limestone outcrops, yam gardens, and coastal villages. The population is around 50,000, speaking the Kilivila language. The Trobriands maintain one of the most intact traditional cultures in PNG: yam houses with intricate facades, the Kula shell-exchange system, and cricket as it was reinvented by islanders in the colonial period. Kiriwina has a government station at Losuia with a hospital, airstrip, and guesthouses.

What are the things to do?
Yam houses — towering decorated facades of thatch and painted panels, fronting the storehouses where ceremonial yams are displayed. Found in most villages — best examples at Olivilevi and Bualou.
Losuia government station — the colonial-era district headquarters with a white-painted church and government buildings.
Kiriwina beaches — white-sand beaches on the eastern coast, with turquoise water and offshore reefs.
Yam harvest festival (Milamala) — the main Trobriand festival, roughly June–August, with dancing, yam display, and ceremonies. 2024 dates TBC — check locally.
Kula shell-exchange observation — the Kula ring is not a tourist performance, but visitors may be able to observe shell-exchange ceremonies with a local contact.
Trobriand cricket — a unique version of cricket where teams can be 50+ players each, with traditional songs and dance celebrations at each wicket; matches are festive and unmissable when they happen.
Snorkelling and diving — the fringing reefs off Kiriwina's east coast offer excellent coral and fish life.
