Malalaua

About Malalaua

Malalaua is a small coastal settlement in Gulf Province, located on the Papuan coast roughly midway between Kerema and the Purari River delta. It serves as the administrative centre for the Malalaua District, one of Gulf's less-developed coastal districts. The area is home to Toaripi and Elema-speaking communities, part of the broader Gulf cultural region known for the hevehe and kovave mask traditions. The economy is subsistence-based: fishing, sago-processing, and small-scale gardening along the coastal strip.

Malalaua sees almost no tourism. It has no accommodation infrastructure, no sealed airstrip, and no road link to Port Moresby. Travellers who arrive here are typically birdwatchers or cultural researchers on their way to the Purari delta or the Lakekamu basin, and they come prepared with their own supplies and transport arrangements.

The nearest airstrip with scheduled service is Kerema Airport (KMA), about 60 km to the west. Charter aircraft can land on Malalaua's grass strip by prior arrangement with MAF.

By Car / Road

Walking and dinghy are the only options. The settlement is strung along the beach and the tidal creek behind it; canoes provide access to neighbouring villages.

Things to do

  • Elema villages — traditional stilt houses along the mangrove creeks, where hevehe mask-making and sago processing are still living traditions.

  • Gulf of Papua coastline — a wild, undeveloped stretch of mangrove-fringed coast with no resorts or infrastructure, only river mouths and fishing camps.

  • Cultural visits — arrange through the Malalaua District office or a local pastor; traditional Elema dance and sago-processing demonstrations can be organised with notice.

  • Birdwatching along the creeks — kingfishers, herons, sea eagles, and the occasional Pesquet's parrot in the taller forest further inland.

  • Fishing — hand-lining from outrigger canoes with local fishermen; expect barramundi, mangrove jack, and threadfin salmon.
