About Laiagam

Laiagam is a small town in Enga Province, located on the Highlands Highway roughly 40 km west of Wabag. It serves as the administrative centre for the Laiagam-Pogera District and is the main service town for the lower Lagaip Valley. The surrounding Enga-speaking population practises intensive sweet-potato cultivation on the steep valley sides, and the area is known for its ceremonial tee exchanges, a complex system of wealth distribution centred on pigs and shell valuables.

The climate is typical Highlands cool: daytime highs around 22–25°C, with overnight lows dropping to 10–12°C. Rain falls year-round, with a drier window June–September.

  • Enga cultural tours — visits to tee exchange ceremonies (by invitation only, not on a fixed calendar). Arrange through the District office.
