About Sogeri

Sogeri is a town on the Sogeri Plateau, roughly 50 km northeast of Port Moresby via the Sogeri Road, at an elevation of about 500 m. It is the headquarters of the Sogeri Sub-District in Kairuku-Hiri District and the gateway to the Kokoda Track's southern trailhead at Owers' Corner. The plateau is significantly cooler and greener than Port Moresby, receiving year-round rainfall that sustains coffee gardens, rubber plantations, vegetable farms, and the largest cattle ranch in the Pacific outside Australia and New Zealand — the Koitaki Cattle Ranch.

Sogeri has a busy rural hospital, a police station, a fruit and vegetable market, several schools including the prestigious Sogeri National High School (founded 1944 by Australian troops), and a handful of lodges. For travellers, it is the primary base before starting or finishing the Kokoda Track, a weekend escape from Port Moresby's heat, and the access point for Varirata National Park and the Crystal Rapids picnic area.

How to reach

By Plane

Port Moresby's Jacksons International Airport (POM) is the nearest airport, 50 km southwest via the Sogeri Road (about 1 hour drive).

By Train

By Car / Road

Sogeri is an easy 1-hour drive from Port Moresby on a sealed, winding road that climbs from sea level to 500 m. PMVs run from Gordons Market to Sogeri for K10–15 per person. A chartered taxi from Port Moresby costs around K150–250 one-way.

The town is walkable. For Varirata National Park, Owers' Corner, and the Crystal Rapids, a hired vehicle is necessary — arrange through your lodge (K200–400 for a half-day tour).

Things to do

  • Koitaki Cattle Ranch — the largest cattle station in the Pacific islands; guided visits can be arranged.

  • Kokoda Track preparation — Sogeri lodges are the standard overnight before starting the Kokoda Track; arrange permits through the Kokoda Track Authority (K350 for foreign trekkers).

  • Birdwatching at Varirata — Raggiana bird-of-paradise, yellow-eyed starling, and forest kingfishers are regularly seen.

  • Swimming at Crystal Rapids — a favourite weekend outing for Port Moresby residents; the pools are safe for swimming year-round.

  • Coffee plantation visits — several small Sogeri coffee growers welcome visitors; the high-altitude arabica is some of PNG's best.
