About Bereina

Bereina is a town in western Central Province, located on the Hiritano Highway roughly 160 km northwest of Port Moresby. It serves as the administrative headquarters of both the Kairuku-Hiri District and the Kairuku Rural LLG. The surrounding area is home to the Roro (Waima) people, whose culture blends coastal fishing traditions with sago-processing from the inland river systems. The town is a classic PNG district centre — a market, police station, airstrip, high school, and a handful of trade stores strung along the highway — and a logical stopover for anyone driving the Hiritano Highway toward Gulf Province.

Climate is tropical savanna: hot year-round (29–32°C) with a distinct wet season from December to April and a drier season May–October when the southeast trade winds bring clearer skies.

How to reach

By Plane

Bereina Airport (BEA) is a small airstrip used by charter and mission flights. The nearest scheduled commercial service is Port Moresby's Jacksons International Airport (POM), 160 km southeast via the Hiritano Highway.

By Train

By Car / Road

Bereina is 2.5–3 hours from Port Moresby on the Hiritano Highway, which is sealed but in variable condition with pot-holed sections west of the Brown River. PMV minibuses run from Gordons Market in Port Moresby (K20–30 per person, 2–3 departures daily). A chartered vehicle costs K400–700 return.

The town is walkable. For nearby villages and the coast, local PMVs and hired dinghies are the main options. No taxis or ride-hailing.

Things to do

  • Mainohana Catholic High School — a De La Salle institution established in 1958, one of Central Province's best-known secondary schools; its campus includes a notable chapel and mission-era architecture.

  • Hiritano Highway road market — a daily roadside produce market selling fresh kaukau (sweet potato), taro, banana, betel nut, and smoked fish.

  • Kairuku coast — the nearby coastline of Kairuku Rural has black-sand beaches and stilt villages; accessible by dinghy from Bereina via the Kairuku River mouth.

  • Visit the weekly Bereina market — the town's main commercial and social hub, best attended on Saturday mornings.

  • Day trip to Yule Island (roughly 40 km west by road and boat) — the historic Catholic mission island where PNG Christianity began in 1885.

  • Kairuku River boat trip — birdwatching, crocodile spotting, and visits to Roro riverside villages.
