Overview

Chiriquí is Panama's westernmost and most mountainous province, dominated by the towering Volcán Barú — the country's highest peak at 3,475 meters — and the fertile highlands of the Cordillera Central. The provincial capital, David, is Panama's third-largest city and the commercial center of the western region. Chiriquí's geography ranges from the Pacific lowlands around David and Puerto Armuelles to the cloud forests and coffee plantations of Boquete and Cerro Punta in the highlands.

The province is Panama's agricultural heartland, producing coffee, strawberries, vegetables, and dairy products in the cool highland climate. Boquete, nestled in the Caldera River valley at around 1,200 meters, has become one of Central America's most popular expatriate and retirement destinations, known for its spring-like climate and world-class coffee. The Pacific coast around Boca Chica and the Gulf of Chiriquí offers whale watching, sport fishing, and island-hopping in a marine national park.

Chiriquí's combination of highland adventure, coffee culture, and Pacific marine experiences makes it one of Panama's most diverse tourism provinces.

When to Visit

The dry season from mid-December to April is ideal for hiking Volcán Barú and exploring the highlands. The coffee harvest runs from October through February, with plantation tours available during this period. Whale watching in the Gulf of Chiriquí peaks from July to October. The highland towns of Boquete and Cerro Punta enjoy spring-like temperatures (15–25°C) year-round, making them pleasant in any season. The Pacific lowlands around David are hottest from February to April (30–35°C). Annual flower and coffee festivals in Boquete typically occur in January.

Cuisine

Chiriquí's highland climate supports a diverse agricultural output reflected in its cuisine. The province is Panama's coffee country — tours and tastings at plantations around Boquete are a major draw. Fresh strawberries, vegetables, and dairy from Cerro Punta supply local restaurants. Trucha (trout) is a highland specialty, farmed in the cool mountain streams around Boquete and Cerro Punta. Meals at local eateries cost US$3–6.

Culture & Festivals

Chiriquí's culture blends mestizo, Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous, and expatriate influences. The Feria de las Flores y del Café (Flower and Coffee Festival) in Boquete in January showcases the province's horticultural heritage with flower displays, parades, and coffee tastings. David hosts a major agricultural fair. The Ngäbe-Buglé communities in the highlands maintain traditional crafts including tagua nut carving and woven baskets. The province has a strong cowboy (vaquero) culture in its lowland cattle ranches. Catholic patron saint festivals are celebrated in most towns. The growing international community in Boquete has added a cosmopolitan layer, with jazz festivals and art exhibitions.
