Zamfara State is a state in north-western Nigeria, created in 1996 from Sokoto State. Its capital, Gusau, is a growing commercial centre. The state is predominantly Hausa-Fulani and was historically part of the Zamfara Kingdom, one of the original Hausa city-states.
The state is an agricultural producer of cotton, groundnuts, millet, and maize. Zamfara gained international attention in the early 2000s for the introduction of Sharia law, making it the first Nigerian state to do so. The state has rich gold deposits, with artisanal mining being a significant activity.
The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit.
