Shinkafi
Zamfara, Nigeria
Why visit Shinkafi?
Shinkafi is a town in Zamfara State, about 116 km from state capital Gusau, and the headquarters of Shinkafi Local Government Area, which borders Sokoto State and Niger to the north. The LGA covers about 674 km² and had an estimated population of around 178,000, predominantly Hausa and Fulani, including the Gobirawa Hausa subgroup. Farming is the main occupation, and the area is known for large-scale tobacco cultivation — both a Nigerian company and Philip Morris have operated tobacco processing there. Shinkafi grew out of the former Isa Native Authority under colonial-era Sokoto Province before becoming its own local government area.
