Gembu

Taraba, Nigeria

Why visit Gembu?

Gembu is the largest town on the Mambilla Plateau in southeastern Taraba State, and serves as headquarters of Sardauna Local Government Area. The Mambilla Plateau itself, with an average elevation of about 1,600 m, is Nigeria's highest plateau; Gembu sits at roughly 1,348 m above sea level, making it among the highest-elevated towns in the country, with a correspondingly cooler climate than most of Nigeria. Nearby Chappal Waddi, at 2,419 m, is the highest mountain in Nigeria and in West Africa.

The plateau is the only part of Nigeria where tea is grown at commercial scale. West Africa's largest highland tea plantation, at Kakara near Gembu, spans some 615 hectares and is run by Mambilla Beverages Nigeria Limited, though the sector as a whole remains relatively underdeveloped. The plateau's cool grasslands also support cattle ranching. Gembu was chosen as the venue for Taraba State's World Tourism Day celebration in 2023, reflecting its standing as one of the state's signature destinations.

Access to Gembu is via a mountain road climbing from Serti at the base of the plateau; the road has historically been rough, particularly in the wet season.
