Taraba State is a state in eastern Nigeria, named after the Taraba River. Its capital, Jalingo, is a growing city. The state is one of Nigeria's most ethnically diverse, with over 50 indigenous groups including the Jukun, Kuteb, Mambilla, Chamba, and Tiv peoples. The state is known for its mountainous terrain — the Mambilla Plateau is the highest plateau in Nigeria, with Gembu being the highest town in the country.
Taraba is rich in natural beauty, including the Gashaka Gumti National Park (shared with Adamawa), the Mambilla Plateau, and the Donga River valley. The state is a major producer of tea, coffee, and rice.
The dry season (November–April) is the best time to visit. The Mambilla Plateau offers cooler temperatures year-round.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season (November–April) is best for the lowlands. The Mambilla Plateau can be visited year-round due to its cooler climate. The Jukun Puje Festival and the Mambilla New Yam Festival are major events.
