Kumo

Kumo is a town about 40 km southeast of Gombe town, on the Gombe–Yola road corridor, and is the administrative headquarters of Akko Local Government Area. It is one of the largest towns of the historic Gombe Emirate, which was founded in 1804 by Buba Yero (Abubakar), a follower of the Fulani jihad leader Usman dan Fodio, under the Sokoto Caliphate. The name Kumo means "spider" in Hausa, said to derive from the historical abundance of spiders in the area. Kumo is a cosmopolitan town of more than 30 ethnic groups, with the Fulani, Tangale, Tera and Hausa among the most prominent, and functions as a trading centre for groundnuts, cotton, maize, sorghum, millet, cowpeas, cassava and livestock produced by the surrounding farming and herding communities.

Kumo is reached by road from Gombe town and Bauchi, on the Gombe–Yola corridor.
