Ise-Ekiti

Ekiti, Nigeria

Why visit Ise-Ekiti?

Ise-Ekiti is a town in southern Ekiti State, near the border with Ondo State, and a market centre for the surrounding farming communities. Its most notable feature is the nearby Ise Forest Reserve, a 142 km² tract upgraded by the Ekiti State government to a conservation area in 2020 to protect one of the last remaining populations of the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes ellioti) — the most threatened chimpanzee subspecies — with fewer than 20 individuals believed to survive there. The reserve faces ongoing pressure from logging and land clearing by surrounding farms.
