Ikole-Ekiti

Ekiti, Nigeria

Why visit Ikole-Ekiti?

Ikole-Ekiti is the headquarters of Ikole LGA in northern Ekiti State. Its traditional ruler, the Elekole of Ikole, is one of only four supreme Obas among Ekiti's traditional sixteen districts — alongside the Owore of Otun, the Ajero of Ijero, and the Ewi of Ado — and also serves as paramount ruler of the Egbeoba ("confederation of Obas") kingdom, reflecting Ikole LGA's unusual makeup of numerous constituent towns each with its own recognized Oba (24 in total, a distinctive feature within Ekiti). Following an administrative boundary readjustment in 1909, Ikole was returned to the Ekiti division from the Kabba (northern) division. The area is home to a predominantly Ekiti-speaking Yoruba population.
