Why visit Igede-Ekiti?

Igede-Ekiti is a town in north-western Ekiti State, founded according to tradition by Ake, a hunter and herbalist who migrated from Ile-Ife with his wife Erindo and servant Awota, settling at Okesu. Its kingship rotates among three ruling houses: Onaowuro, Oborolada, and Okiribiti. Igede-Ekiti holds a distinctive place in Yoruba religious tradition as the ancestral home of the river goddess Osun, who is said to have left the town after a dispute with her siblings and settled at Osogbo — the custodians of the Osun-Osogbo festival still make an annual visit to Igede-Ekiti's Elemi pond, the goddess's original source, ahead of that festival. The town holds its own annual celebration, the Iromo Igede festival. The area is agricultural, producing yam and cassava.
