It is the ancestral home of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Nigeria's former head of state, and the Abubakar family compound is a local landmark. Fugar is an Afenmai (Etsako) town known for its traditional architecture and the annual Odumu festival. The town's economy is based on yam, cassava, rice, and livestock farming.

Fugar is on the Auchi–Lokoja road, about 30 minutes north of Auchi. Buses between Auchi and Lokoja pass through.
