It is an agricultural market town growing yam, cassava, and rice, and sits in the rolling hills of southern Esanland. Ubiaja is the seat of the Onojie of Ubiaja and hosts the annual Ugie traditional festival. The town has a growing commercial sector and serves as a link between Esan communities and the neighbouring Igbo areas of Delta State.
