Uburu

Ebonyi, Nigeria

Why visit Uburu?

Uburu is a town in Ohaozara LGA, southern Ebonyi State, and home to the larger of the region's two salt lakes (the other being nearby Okposi's). Local tradition credits its discovery, some 400 years ago, to two hunters who found the water too salty to drink; women subsequently developed a solar-evaporation method to process the brine into salt. Before industrial salt production, communities like Uburu that held natural salt deposits became important regional trading centres, drawing traders from across what is now southeastern Nigeria. The lake played a notable role during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970): with Biafra cut off from outside supply, salt from the Uburu and Okposi lakes — reportedly the highest-salinity brine tested in Eastern Nigeria — helped sustain the population.
