Edda

Ebonyi, Nigeria

Why visit Edda?

Edda is a Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, Nigeria — officially renamed from Afikpo South in 2023, though the older name still appears on maps and in casual use. It sits south-east of Abakaliki, split off from the larger Afikpo LGA in 1991. The Eddic people, a sub-group of the Igbo, historically organized as roughly 72 autonomous village communities that functioned as a loose confederation of small city-states until incorporation into the British Southern Nigeria Protectorate in 1867; several of the old monarchies survive today as cultural and social institutions without administrative power. The LGA's headquarters is Nguzu Edda, and its constituent communities include Ebunwana Edda, Ekoli Edda, Owutu Edda, Amangwu Edda, Oso Edda, Etiti Edda, and Ogbu Edda. The area is largely agricultural, farming yams, cassava, and rice.
