Overview

Ebonyi State is a small, landlocked state in south-eastern Nigeria, created in 1996 from parts of Abia and Enugu states. Its capital, Abakaliki, is a fast-growing city known for its agricultural wealth, particularly in rice production — Ebonyi is often called the "Rice Capital of Nigeria." The state is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo people, with several subgroups including the Izzi, Ezza, Ikwo, and Afikpo.

The landscape is characterised by rolling plains, the Cross River basin in the south-east, and the Abakaliki salt lakes — natural salt pans that have been harvested for centuries. The state is also a major producer of yams, cassava, and vegetables. Abakaliki is famous for its New Yam Festival, one of the most vibrant in Igboland.

Ebonyi is safe and welcoming. The dry season (November–March) is the best time for travel. The state's compact size makes it easy to reach from Enugu, which has the nearest airport.

When to Visit

The dry season (November–March) is best. The rainy season (April–October) brings heavy downpours. The Abakaliki New Yam Festival (August–September) and the Afikpo Masquerade Festival (December–January) are major events.
