Delta State is a major state in the South-South region of Nigeria, situated in the western part of the Niger Delta. Its capital is Asaba, on the west bank of the Niger River, directly opposite Onitsha in Anambra State. The state is named after the Niger Delta, the vast riverine network that defines its southern reaches. Warri, the state's largest city and commercial hub, is the centre of Nigeria's oil and gas industry.
The state is ethnically diverse, with the Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Igbo (Anioma), and Isoko peoples as the main groups. The Niger River forms the eastern boundary, while the coast along the Bight of Benin is a maze of mangrove creeks, oil terminals, and fishing villages. The state is also a major agricultural producer, with cassava, yams, palm oil, and rubber as key crops.
Delta State has the best road network in the Niger Delta. The East-West Road connects Warri to Port Harcourt and Lagos. The dry season (November–March) is the best time for travel. The state is safe for travel in the main cities, though security is occasionally affected by oil-related community tensions.
When to Visit
The dry season (November–March) is ideal. The rainy season (April–October) brings heavy downpours and occasional flooding. The Warri Boat Regatta (December) and the Asaba Carnival are major events.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Asaba International Airport (ABB) and Osubi Airport (Warri) serve the state. Asaba is connected to Onitsha by the Niger Bridge. The East-West Road links Warri to Port Harcourt (2 hrs) and Benin City (1.5 hrs). Buses and taxis operate between all major towns. River transport is common for reaching creek communities.
