Monguno

Borno, Nigeria

Why visit Monguno?

Monguno is a town roughly 100 km northeast of Maiduguri, near the shores of Lake Chad, and the headquarters of Monguno Local Government Area. It was historically an important centre for fishing, agriculture, and trade in the Lake Chad basin.

Monguno has been a key garrison town and repeated flashpoint of the Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgency for over a decade: armed groups briefly captured the town and a nearby military base in January 2015 before Nigerian forces retook it in February that year, and it has continued to see periodic attacks and clashes since, including a deadly ambush near the town in 2019. Security remains extremely challenging. Travellers must exercise extreme caution and obtain security clearances.
