Awka is the capital city of Anambra State, situated in the heart of Igboland. Historically known for its blacksmithing industry — Awka blacksmiths were renowned across West Africa — the city has transformed into a modern administrative centre. Awka hosts Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), one of Nigeria's largest federal universities, with a lively academic atmosphere. The climate is tropical with distinct wet and dry seasons. The city serves as the seat of government and a hub for education in Anambra.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Asaba International Airport (ABB), about 40 km south-west across the Niger River. It has domestic flights from Lagos and Abuja. Alternatively, Enugu Airport (ENU) is about 80 km east.

By Train

Awka is not directly on the railway line. The nearest station is in Onitsha.

By Car / Road

Awka lies on the Enugu–Onitsha expressway. Buses from Enugu (1.5 hr), Onitsha (45 min), and Lagos (6 hr) arrive at the motor park. Transport companies include GIGM, Chisco, and ABC.

Taxis, keke tricycles, and okada are the main local transport. The city is spread along the main highway.

Where to eat?

Awka has a good selection of restaurants serving Igbo and Nigerian dishes. The UNIZIK area has many student-oriented eateries. Try the local okpa (bambara nut pudding) and ofe nsala (white soup).

Where to drink?

Bars around the city centre and UNIZIK area serve beer, soft drinks, and zobo.
