Why visit Igbo-Ukwu?

Igbo-Ukwu is a historic town in Anambra State, world-famous for the archaeological discoveries of bronze and copper artefacts dating back to the 9th century AD. Excavated by Thurstan Shaw in the 1950s and 1960s, the Igbo-Ukwu bronzes are among the earliest known metalwork in West Africa, revealing a sophisticated pre-colonial civilisation with long-distance trade connections. The Igbo-Ukwu Museum displays these remarkable artefacts. The town is also a centre of Igbo traditional religion.
