It is the headquarters of the Kuje Area Council and an agricultural centre known for its vegetable and grain farming. Kuje is also home to the Kuje Correctional Centre (a federal prison) and the growing Kuje Central Market. The area retains a semi-rural character with scattered villages and farmlands.

About 1 hour from central Abuja via the A2 highway south. Shared taxis from Abuja serve Kuje.
