About Rotterdam
Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands (650,000 inhabitants) and Europe's largest port by cargo volume. It is a city of modern architecture, rebuilt from near-total destruction in World War II. The city centre is a showcase of bold contemporary design — the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen), the Markthal, the Erasmus Bridge and the towering skyscrapers of the Kop van Zuid.
The port stretches over 40 km from the city to the North Sea and is the economic engine of the province. Despite its industrial image, Rotterdam has a vibrant cultural scene, a multicultural population (about 50% of residents have a foreign background), excellent museums and a lively food scene. The climate is maritime, with mild winters and cool summers.
