About Coevorden
Coevorden is a small historic city in southern Drenthe, considered one of the oldest (if not the oldest) settlements in the province. Its name first appears in records from 1036, with a city charter dating to 1148. The name Coevorden shares its meaning with Oxford (England) and the Bosphorus (Turkey) — all referring to a river crossing for cattle, specifically cows or oxen.
The city occupies a significant place in Dutch medieval history. In 1227, Coevorden troops defeated an army from the Bishopric of Utrecht at the Battle of Ane, taking over 400 lives on the Utrecht side — a victory that resonates similarly to the Battle of the Golden Spurs in Flemish history. During the Eighty Years' War, Coevorden was held by the Spanish from 1581 to 1592, and the siege of 1592 left the city completely wrecked, leading to a complete rebuild and vast expansions of its defensive earthen ramparts, parts of which remain today. The municipality includes 37 other villages and hamlets, the largest being Dalen, Sleen, and Schoonoord.
