Why visit Tansen?

Tansen is a historic hill town at 1,372 m in Palpa District, known for its well-preserved Newari architecture, panoramic Himalayan views, and relaxed atmosphere. It was an important trading post on the route between the Terai and Pokhara and still retains a wealth of traditional houses, cobblestone streets, and old temples. The town offers some of the best mountain views in western Nepal.

The climate is mild with warm summers and cool winters. The best time to visit is October–March. The town is compact and pedestrian-friendly.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Gautam Buddha International Airport (BWA) in Siddharthanagar is 60 km south-west. A taxi from the airport to Tansen costs Rs 3000–4000 (1.5 hours).

By Train

No train service.

By Car / Road

Tansen is 60 km north of Siddharthanagar (1.5 hours) and 50 km west of Butwal. Buses from Butwal and Siddharthanagar run daily.

On foot. The old town is car-free in its core.

  • Palpa Durbar – The former palace of the Palpa kings, now a museum.
  • Bansha Gopal Temple – An important temple in the town centre.
  • Amar Narayan Temple – A three-storeyed pagoda temple.
  • Sunrise viewpoints – Several points along the ridge offer Himalayan vistas.
  • Raniban (Queen's Forest) – A forested area on the outskirts with walking trails.

Palpa is famous for its dhaka fabric (traditional woven cloth). The main bazaar has several shops selling dhaka, handicrafts, and local produce.
