Why visit Charikot?

Charikot is the district headquarters of Dolakha District, located at 1,950 m on the road between Kathmandu and the Tibet/Kodari border. It is a scenic hillside town with views of the Gaurishankar and Langtang Himalayan ranges. The town is a gateway for treks to the Gaurishankar Conservation Area and Everest region via Jiri, and is known for its pleasant climate and traditional Tamang and Sherpa communities.

The climate is temperate, with warm summers, a monsoon season (June–September), and cold winters. The best times to visit are March–May and October–November.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is 110 km west. Taxi from Kathmandu costs Rs 5000–7000 (3–4 hours).

By Train

No train service.

By Car / Road

Charikot is on the Arniko Highway, 110 km east of Kathmandu (3–4 hours by bus). Buses from Kathmandu's Old Bus Park (Rs 300–600) run regularly. The road to the Tibet border at Kodari continues north from Charikot.

The town is compact and walkable. Taxis and shared jeeps serve surrounding villages.

What are the things to do?

  • Bhairav Temple – A historic temple dedicated to Bhairav in the town centre.
  • Dolakha viewpoints – Panoramic views of Gaurishankar (7,134 m) and the Langtang range.
  • Charikot Bazaar – Traditional market with a lively atmosphere.

Trek in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. Use Charikot as a stopover on the way to Jiri or Kodari/Tibet.
