Why visit Chautara?

Chautara is the district headquarters of Sindhupalchok District, located on the Arniko Highway north-east of Kathmandu, about halfway to the Tibetan border at Kodari. The town sits at 1,550 m on a ridge above the Indrawati River valley, serving as an administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding rural area. The district is known for its dramatic mountain scenery and the Bhote Koshi River.

The climate is subtropical hill climate with warm summers, a monsoon (June–September), and cool winters. The best time to visit is October–March.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is at Kathmandu (KTM), 80 km south-west. Taxi from Kathmandu costs Rs 3000–4000 (2 hours).

By Train

No train service.

By Car / Road

Chautara is on the Arniko Highway, 80 km north-east of Kathmandu (2–3 hours by bus). Buses from Kathmandu's Old Bus Park (Rs 200–400) run frequently to Kodari/Tibet border.

The town is walkable. Shared jeeps connect surrounding villages.
