Outapi

Omusati, Namibia

Why visit Outapi?

Outapi is the capital of the Omusati Region, about 90 km northwest of Oshakati near the Angolan border, and a commercial centre for the surrounding Ovambo farming communities. It was Namibia's smallest town in 2001, with just over 2,600 residents, but has grown rapidly since — the 2023 census recorded a population of around 13,700. The town hosts the annual Olufuko Festival, a cultural celebration and business expo (initiated in 2012) built around a traditional initiation ceremony marking girls' passage to womanhood. It is also close to the Ombalantu Baobab Tree and to Omugulugwombashe, the heritage site where Namibia's armed liberation struggle began in 1966.
