About Amarapura
Amarapura, meaning "Immortal City" in Pali, is a historic city on the eastern shore of Taungthaman Lake, about 11 km south of Mandalay. It was the capital of the Konbaung Dynasty from 1783 to 1859, serving as the royal seat before King Mindon moved the capital to Mandalay. Today it is a popular day-trip destination from Mandalay, best known for U Bein Bridge — a 1.2-km teak footbridge built in the 1780s that is the longest and oldest teak bridge in the world.
Amarapura is also famous for its silk and cotton weaving industry, with many family-run workshops producing the finest textiles in Myanmar. The town has a peaceful lakeside atmosphere, especially at sunset when the bridge is silhouetted against the golden sky.
