About Hponkanrazi Wildlife Sanctuary

Hponkanrazi Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in northern Kachin State, adjacent to Hkakaborazi National Park. Covering 2,700 km² of the eastern Himalayas, the sanctuary protects a rich diversity of habitats from subtropical forests to alpine meadows. It was established in 2003 and is a key part of the Northern Forest Complex, one of the most biodiverse regions in mainland Southeast Asia. Like Hkakaborazi, it is accessed via Putao and requires permits and guides.

How to reach

Access is from Putao by trek (3–5 days). Fly from Myitkyina to Putao, then trek into the sanctuary with a licensed guide. The best season is November to April.
