Overview

Zeta is a newly created municipality in central Montenegro, carved from the Podgorica capital city administrative unit and named after the Zeta Plain — the broad, fertile lowland that stretches south of the capital toward Lake Skadar (Skadarsko Jezero). The municipality's seat is Golubovci, a satellite settlement best known as the site of Montenegro's main international airport (Podgorica Airport / TGD), and the area functions partly as Podgorica's suburban and agricultural hinterland.

The Zeta Plain is one of Montenegro's most productive agricultural zones, with orchards, vineyards, and vegetable plots feeding the capital. To the south, the landscape transitions into wetlands and lakeshore as it approaches Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans and a national park. The municipality encompasses several villages — Mojanovići, Mataguži, Mahala, and Vranjina — each with a quiet, rural character that offers a stark contrast to the urban energy of nearby Podgorica. Vranjina, situated on a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway at the edge of Lake Skadar, is particularly scenic.

When to Visit

The Zeta Plain shares Podgorica's Mediterranean-influenced continental climate: hot, dry summers (June–August, 30–38 °C) and mild, wet winters (December–February, 3–10 °C). The best months to visit are April–June and September–October, when temperatures are comfortable for walking, cycling, and exploring the villages and lakeshore.

Summer can be intensely hot on the flat plain with little shade, though Lake Skadar's breezes offer some relief in Vranjina and the southern settlements. Winter is quiet and grey but mild by European standards. Spring brings wildflowers to the wetlands and is the best season for birdwatching at the lake, when migratory species are present. Grape harvest season (late September–October) enlivens the rural villages.

Getting Around

Golubovci sits approximately 12 km south of Podgorica's centre and is connected by regular city bus services (the journey takes 20–30 minutes). The municipality's villages are spread across the flat Zeta Plain and are reachable by local roads; a car or bicycle is the most practical way to explore. Taxis from Podgorica to Golubovci cost around €10–15.

Podgorica Airport (TGD), located within the municipality at Golubovci, is Montenegro's primary international gateway with year-round flights to Belgrade, Istanbul, and seasonal European destinations. The main road from Podgorica toward Bar and the coast passes through the municipality, and the Belgrade–Bar railway line has stops in the area. Vranjina, at the southern edge near Lake Skadar, is roughly 25 km from Podgorica by road.

Cuisine

Food in the Zeta municipality reflects the agricultural richness of the plain. The area is a major producer of peppers, tomatoes, watermelons, and stone fruits that supply Podgorica's markets — seasonal produce is outstanding. Vineyards on the plain contribute to Montenegro's wine tradition, with local producers offering table wines and rakija (fruit brandy).

Restaurants and konoba (taverns) in the villages serve traditional Montenegrin fare: grilled meats (ćevapi, pljeskavica, ražnjići), hearty stews, fresh salads from local gardens, and dairy products including local cheeses and kajmak (clotted cream). In Vranjina, fresh fish from Lake Skadar — particularly carp (krap) and bleak (ukljeva) — is the specialty, often prepared grilled, smoked, or as riblja čorba (fish soup). Dining is informal and affordable; a full meal in a village tavern typically costs €5–10.

Culture & Festivals

Zeta's cultural life is rooted in the rural traditions of the Zeta Plain. The area has been inhabited since antiquity — the medieval Zeta state was a precursor to Montenegro itself, and the plain's name carries deep historical resonance in Montenegrin national identity. Village life revolves around the agricultural calendar, Orthodox Christian observances, and community gatherings.

Religious holidays — particularly Orthodox Easter and Christmas — are the main annual celebrations, marked by family feasts and church services in village parishes. The grape harvest in autumn brings informal village festivals with wine, rakija, and traditional music. Vranjina's position on Lake Skadar connects it to the lake's broader cultural ecosystem, including the fishing traditions and folk songs of the Montenegrin lake communities. The broader Podgorica area hosts cultural events (theatre, film, music festivals) that residents of Zeta can easily access.
