Why visit Velika?

Velika is a high-altitude mountain village located in the Plav municipality of northeastern Montenegro. It is situated in a dramatic alpine valley below the Čakor Pass, bordering Kosovo. How do you get there?

Velika is reached via the mountain road leading from Murino up toward the Čakor Pass. It is about 8 km from Murino and 18 km from Plav. Due to the mountain terrain, a private car (preferably 4WD) is the best way to reach the village. The road over Čakor Pass is often closed in winter due to snow.

The village is scattered across the mountain slopes and is best explored on foot or by car. Hiking is the primary way to navigate the surrounding alpine trails.

What are the things to do?

The village features the Church of St. Kirik and Julita, built as a memorial to the victims of World War II. The dramatic mountain peaks of the Čakor range and the deep valleys offer spectacular natural scenery.

Hike the challenging trails leading up to the Čakor Pass and the surrounding peaks. The area is excellent for eco-tourism, observing traditional mountain farming, and picking wild berries and herbs in the summer.

Where to eat?

There are no restaurants in the village. Visitors can enjoy traditional meals by arranging home-stays with local families, or dine in nearby Murino or Plav.

Where to drink?

Water from the local mountain springs is exceptionally pure and cold. Local families make traditional herbal teas and homemade fruit brandies.

Where to stay?

Accommodation is limited to a few rustic eco-farms, mountain huts, and rural home-stays. Most visitors stay in Plav and visit Velika as a day hike.

What should you buy?

There are no shops in Velika. Visitors must bring their own supplies. Local families occasionally sell traditional mountain cheese, honey, and forest fruits.
