Bar is a coastal municipality in southern Montenegro, stretching along the Adriatic Sea at the foot of the Rumija mountain range. Unlike the medieval walled tourist magnets of Kotor and Budva, Bar is a working port city with a year-round local population, a major ferry terminal connecting Montenegro to Italy, and a character shaped more by everyday Montenegrin life than by tourism. The municipality encompasses a diverse coastline — from the port city itself to quieter beach towns, the scenic Skadar Lake border, and the dramatic mountain backdrop of Rumija.
The municipality's greatest historical treasure is Stari Bar (Old Town), one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites on the Adriatic coast. Perched on a cliff 4 km inland, its ruined churches, mosques, and fortifications bear witness to centuries of Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman, and Montenegrin rule. Nearby stands the Stara Maslina, one of the oldest olive trees in the world at over 2,000 years of age — a living monument to the Mediterranean agricultural traditions that have shaped this coast for millennia.
Bar municipality also serves as the southern gateway to Montenegro's coastline, with easy access to Lake Skadar National Park via the village of Virpazar, the beaches of Sutomore and Canj, and the Albanian border just 30 minutes south at Ulcinj. It is a municipality that rewards travellers seeking authenticity over polish, with excellent seafood, affordable prices, and a fraction of the crowds found further up the coast.
When to Visit
The prime season is May to September, with July and August being the warmest (30–35 °C) and busiest, especially at Sutomore and Canj beaches. June and September offer a sweet spot of warm weather (25–30 °C), swimmable sea temperatures, and fewer visitors. The coastal climate is Mediterranean — mild winters (8–12 °C) with occasional rain, and hot, dry summers. Bar itself operates year-round as a working city, unlike some seasonal tourist towns on the coast. Spring (April–May) is ideal for hiking Rumija and exploring Stari Bar without summer heat. Winter brings fewer tourists and some beach facilities close, but restaurants and the port remain active.
Cultural events include the Bar Chronicle (Barski Ljetopis), a summer cultural festival (July–August) featuring theatre, music, and art exhibitions. Olive harvest festivals and local slava celebrations (Orthodox patron saint days) occur throughout the year.

WhatsAppGetting Around
Bar is well-connected by road and rail. The E65/E80 coastal highway links Bar to Budva (50 km, ~1 hour), Kotor (80 km, ~1.5 hours), and Podgorica (55 km, ~1 hour). Buses run frequently along the coast to Budva, Tivat, Kotor, and Ulcinj (30 minutes south). The bus station is 2 km from the centre and 300 m from the train station; cash only. For the beaches in Sutomore, buses from Podgorica/Budva/Kotor can drop you in Sutomore directly.
The Bar–Podgorica–Belgrade railway is one of Europe's most scenic rail lines, crossing mountains and canyons. Trains to Podgorica depart several times daily (€2.40, ~1 hour). The Belgrade service (day train "Tara" and night train "Lovčen," ~11 hours) operates seasonally.
Within the municipality, a local bus runs between Sutomore and Bar hourly during summer. Taxis are affordable (€4 from the city centre to Stari Bar). Car rental is available from around €35/day. Walking is feasible within the compact city centre.

WhatsAppCuisine
Bar's cuisine reflects its Adriatic and Montenegrin mountain heritage. Seafood dominates the coastal table: grilled branzino (sea bass), squid, octopus salad, black risotto (crni rižot), and buzara-style shellfish (cooked in wine, garlic, and tomato). Fresh fish is sold daily at the port. Montenegrin mountain food — kačamak, cicvara, grilled meats, and smoked ham (pršut) — is available at konobas (taverns) inland.

Vegetarian options are limited but include cheese-based dishes, salads, and grilled vegetables. Olive oil from local groves is excellent.
Culture & Festivals
Bar's cultural life centres on its layered history — Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Slavic, Ottoman, and Venetian influences are all visible in the Old Town ruins. The Bar Chronicle (Barski Ljetopis) is the municipality's flagship cultural event, a multi-week summer festival of theatre, music, visual arts, and literary events held in various venues across the city (July–August).
Orthodox Christian traditions shape the calendar, with Christmas (7 January), Easter, and local slava celebrations observed with church services and feasts. The Church of St. Jovan Vladimir is a significant religious site. Olive cultivation is culturally central — the region's olive groves have been tended for over two millennia, and the autumn olive harvest remains a communal event. Traditional Montenegrin music, including gusle epic poetry, is performed at cultural gatherings.
