Arvaikheer is the capital of Övörhangay Province (Ovorhangay Aimag), located in central Mongolia about 430 km south-west of Ulaanbaatar. With a population of around 20,000, it is an important commercial and administrative centre serving the surrounding pastoral communities. The name means "Barley Steppe" in Mongolian. The city sits at an elevation of 1,830 m on a broad plain at the foot of the Khangai Mountains.

The climate is continental: cold winters (-20 to -30°C) and mild summers (15-25°C). The best travel season is June through August.
