Ungheni is a district in western Moldova, bordering Romania along the Prut River. The district center, the town of Ungheni, is a major border crossing point and railway junction — the Eiffel Bridge across the Prut, designed by Gustave Eiffel, is a notable landmark. The district lies on the Moldavian Plateau, with the Prut valley creating scenic river landscapes. As one of Moldova's 37 administrative divisions, it embodies the rural, agricultural heart of the country — a landscape of rolling hills, sunflower fields, vineyards, and traditional villages where daily life moves at the pace of the seasons.
The district center, Ungheni, serves as the main hub for services and transport, while the surrounding countryside offers visitors a glimpse of authentic Moldovan village life. The area sees very few international tourists, making it an appealing destination for those seeking uncrowded landscapes, genuine hospitality, and a slower travel experience.
When to Visit
The best months to visit are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October). Summers (July–August) can be hot across the open landscape, often exceeding 30°C, while winters are cold and grey with occasional snowfall. Spring brings blooming orchards and green fields, while autumn offers the grape harvest and the warm golds and browns of the vine leaves.

WhatsAppGetting Around
The district is best explored by car or taxi, ideally rented in Chișinău for flexibility. Public transport consists of buses and marshrutka minibuses connecting the main town to the capital, with less frequent services to smaller villages. Roads within the district are mostly paved but can be poorly lit; rural lanes are often unpaved. Distances are modest — most settlements lie within 30–40 km of the district center.

WhatsAppCuisine
Ungheni's position as a border town gives its food scene a cross-border character. Moldovan staples dominate, but Romanian influences from across the Prut are evident. The Ungheni market offers a good selection of local produce, cheeses, and wines. Restaurants near the border crossing cater to travellers.
Culture & Festivals
The Eiffel Bridge over the Prut is Ungheni's most famous landmark — a riveted steel railway bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel's firm, completed in 1877 and still in use. The town also has a Museum of History and Ethnography and a notable railway station. The border crossing is one of Moldova's busiest, connecting to the Romanian town of Iași.
