Jalisco, Mexico

About Tequila

Tequila is a small town of about 30,000 people in the Jalisco highlands, approximately 60 km northwest of Guadalajara. It is the birthplace of Mexico's most famous spirit — tequila — and the center of the blue agave landscape that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. The town itself is a charming colonial settlement with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and a central plaza dominated by the Parroquia Santiago Apóstol church.

The surrounding countryside is covered with the distinctive blue-green agave fields that stretch to the horizon, creating one of Mexico's most iconic landscapes. Several major distilleries (tequila haciendas) operate in and around town, offering tours of the production process from harvesting the agave piñas to distillation and aging. The town is a Pueblo Mágico and draws visitors for distillery tours, tastings, regional cuisine, and the annual National Tequila Fair.

Tequila has a warm, semi-arid climate with the rainy season from June to October. The best time to visit is November through April when temperatures are comfortable and skies are clear.

How to reach

By Plane

The nearest airport is Guadalajara International Airport (GDL), about 60 km southeast. From there, take a bus, taxi, or rental car to Tequila (approximately 1–1.5 hours).

By Train

The Tequila Express is a tourist train that runs from Guadalajara to Tequila on select days, offering distillery tours, tastings, mariachi music, and regional food. It departs from the Ferromex station in Guadalajara and takes about 1.5 hours each way. Reservations are essential.

By Car / Road

Tequila is about 60 km from Guadalajara via Highway 15 north, then west on local roads (approximately 1 hour). Second-class buses run frequently from Guadalajara's Central Vieja (M$80–100, about 1.5 hours).

The town center is compact and walkable — most distilleries, restaurants, and attractions are within a 10–15 minute walk of the main plaza. Taxis and moto-taxis are available for trips to outlying distilleries and the agave fields. Several tour operators offer horseback and ATV tours through the agave landscape.

Things to do

  • La Rojeña (José Cuervo) Distillery — the oldest active distillery in Latin America, offering tours of the production process and aging cellars, with tastings included
  • Herradura Distillery (Hacienda San José del Refugio) — a beautifully preserved 19th-century hacienda producing premium tequila, with tours and a museum
  • Museo Nacional del Tequila (MUNAL) — a museum documenting the history and cultural significance of tequila production
  • Parroquia Santiago Apóstol — the town's main church overlooking the central plaza, with a baroque facade
  • Agave landscape — the UNESCO-listed fields of blue agave stretching across the surrounding valleys, best viewed from elevated viewpoints outside town

Take a distillery tour — most offer guided walks through the production facilities, from the agave cooking ovens through fermentation, distillation, and aging. Tastings range from basic blanco tequilas to aged extra-añejos. The Tequila Express from Guadalajara packages the experience with transportation, meals, and entertainment.

Walk through the agave fields with a local guide to learn about the cultivation and harvesting of the blue agave plant, which takes 8–12 years to mature. Visit during the harvest season (October–March) to see jimadores (agave harvesters) at work. Horseback riding and ATV tours through the agave landscape are available through local operators.

Food & Dining

Regional cuisine centers on hearty highland fare. Try birria (spiced goat stew), carne en su jugo, and hand-made tortillas at restaurants around the main plaza. The Museo Nacional del Tequila has a restaurant serving traditional Jalisco cuisine. Many distilleries include regional buffets with their tours — the José Cuervo Express and Herradura tours both feature local food. Street vendors sell tacos, elote, and tequila-based candies. Budget meals at local fondas cost M$60–100.

Cafes & Nightlife

Tequila, obviously. Sample the full range from blanco (unaged) to reposado (2–12 months in oak), añejo (1–3 years), and extra-añejo (3+ years). Raicilla, a regional agave spirit similar to mezcal, is also produced in the area and available at some bars. Tejuino (fermented corn drink with lime sherbet) is a non-alcoholic alternative. Bars around the plaza offer tequila flights and cocktails.
