Bassiknou

Hodh ech Chargui, Mauritania

Why visit Bassiknou?

Bassiknou is a small border town in the far southeast of Hodh ech Chargui region, near the Malian frontier. It sits in the Sahelian zone, with sparse acacia bushland and seasonal grasses supporting livestock grazing. The population is primarily Fulani and Moorish, with livelihoods centred on pastoralism and small-scale cross-border trade. Bassiknou is a practical stop for travellers crossing between Mauritania and Mali, though facilities are minimal and the security situation in the border area should be carefully assessed before travel.
