Selibaby

Sélibaby is the capital of the Guidimaka region, located in southern Mauritania near the Senegal River and the Mali border. It is the most important town in the south, a market centre for the agricultural and pastoral zone. The population is predominantly Soninke, with significant Fulani and Moorish minorities. Sélibaby has a more tropical feel than the Moorish north — greener, wetter, and culturally oriented toward the Senegal River valley and Mali.

Sélibaby has a small airstrip with occasional flights. The nearest airport with regular service is Kiffa (KFA), 250 km north.

Sélibaby is connected to Nouakchott (700 km, 8–10 hours) by paved road via Kaédi and Aleg. Bush taxis and minibuses run daily.

The town is walkable. Motorcycle taxis are common.

• Sélibaby Grand Marché — The largest market in southern Mauritania, with Soninke and Malian traders, fresh produce, and livestock.

• Senegal River area — The river and its floodplain are visible south of town.

• Centre de Santé mosque — The town's main mosque.

• Market shopping — The market is the best place in Mauritania to buy Soninke crafts and Malian imports.

• Visit surrounding Soninke villages — Traditional round-hut compounds and agricultural life.

Restaurants serve Soninke and Malian cuisine: rice with peanut sauce (mafé), okra sauce, fish from the Senegal River, and grilled chicken. Fresh fruit (mangoes in season) is abundant.

Sélibaby has basic hotels including Auberbe Guidimaka (MRU 1,500–3,000). Simple but adequate.

Soninke textiles, Malian fabrics, shea butter products, and fresh produce. Bargaining is expected.
