Adrar

Adrar is the heart of Mauritanian tourism and one of the most spectacular desert regions in the Sahara. The Adrar Plateau rises dramatically from the surrounding plains, with vast ergs (dune seas), deep canyons, ancient ksour (fortified villages), and date-palm oases. It contains two UNESCO World Heritage sites — Chinguetti and Ouadane — both medieval caravan centres that once housed libraries of precious Islamic manuscripts. The regional capital Atar is the base for desert excursions. Adrar also features the oasis of Terjit with its natural spring pools, the ancient Almoravid capital of Azougui, and some of the Sahara's most dramatic dune landscapes around the Dune of Chinguetti. For desert lovers, Adrar is the quintessential Sahara experience.

November to February is the ideal season: daytime temperatures 25–30°C, cold at night (5–10°C). October and March are also good. April to September is scorching (40–50°C) and unsuitable for extended desert travel. The Festival des Villes Anciennes in Chinguetti (December/January) is the main cultural event.

The main road from Nouakchott to Atar (480 km) is paved. A paved road also connects Atar to Chinguetti and Ouadane. Bush taxis run from Nouakchott to Atar (6–8 hours). Desert travel beyond the paved roads requires a 4×4 with a driver — hire in Atar (MRU 5,000–10,000 per day). Choum is on the Iron Ore Train route, accessible by train from Nouadhibou or Zouérat.

• Terjit — A lush oasis with natural spring-fed pools shaded by date palms, perfect for a refreshing dip.
• Aoujeft — A traditional village in the Adrar wadi system, known for its date harvest and Saharan architecture.
• Choum — A small railway town on the Iron Ore Train route, near the Western Sahara border.

Adrar's cuisine is Saharan: méchoui (whole roasted lamb), grilled meat brochettes, couscous with vegetables and lamb, dates (the local harvest is renowned), and millet porridge. Ataya (sweet mint tea) is central to social life, poured ceremonially in three rounds.

The Festival des Villes Anciennes in Chinguetti celebrates music, poetry, and manuscript heritage. Traditional Moorish music — using the tidinit (lute) and ardin (harp) — is performed. Adrar is also known for its oral poetry traditions and the annual Camel Festival.
