Niéna, whose name means "water" in Bambara, is a small town and rural commune in the Cercle of Sikasso, about 76 km west of Sikasso city on the RN7, the main road linking Sikasso and Bougouni. It sits on the Bani River and is an agricultural centre known for cotton and rice production. The commune covers about 1,040 km² and includes the town and 42 villages, with a population of roughly 32,300 at the 2009 census.
