Why visit Bougouni?
Bougouni, whose name means "small house" in Bambara, is a town in Mali's Sikasso Region, about 170 km south of Bamako and 210 km west of Sikasso city. The commune had a population of roughly 59,700 at the 2009 census, predominantly Fula. It became the administrative centre of French Sudan's fourteenth colonial commune in 1894, initially serving as a quarantine post for surrounding villages before developing independently; its colonial archives were lost in a fire during the March 1991 uprising against President Moussa Traoré. Bougouni is a junction town on the route between Bamako and Côte d'Ivoire, and the surrounding area produces cotton, which is processed and shipped through the town.
