Kolokani

Koulikoro, Mali

Why visit Kolokani?

Kolokani is a town of roughly 57,000 people and the seat of Kolokani Cercle, an administrative division covering about 12,000 km² in the west-center of Koulikoro Region. The area is the historical heart of Beledougou, a precolonial Bambara region that remained predominantly animist even after the fall of the Bambara Empire, and its population today is still primarily Bambara farmers. In 1915, Beledougou was the center of a major uprising against French forced conscription, led by Koumi Diosse Traoré — one of the more significant local revolts against colonial rule in this part of French Sudan.
