Banamba

Banamba is the chef-lieu of the Cercle of Banamba in the Koulikoro Region of southern Mali, north of the regional capital Koulikoro and connected to it by a 40 km all-weather road via Sirakorola. It was founded by Marka settlers from Sokolo in the 1840s and grew into a significant hub of the 19th-century trans-Saharan trade, linking the Niger River valley to the salt markets of Taoudenni and North Africa. Banamba is also historically notable as the epicenter of the 1905 Banamba slave exodus, one of the largest acts of mass self-emancipation in African history: beginning in March 1905, enslaved people across the region — reportedly numbering in the hundreds of thousands over the following years — left their masters en masse, walking back to their home regions (particularly Sikasso and Bougouni) after rumors of impending abolition spread; the exodus is credited by historians as a major turning point in the decline of slavery in the Western Sudan.
