Fuvammulah, Maldives
About Fuvahmulah
Fuvahmulah is the sole island of Fuvammulah Atoll in the southern Maldives, with a population of approximately 12,000. Unlike any other atoll in the country, Fuvahmulah is a single island rising from the deep ocean. It is famous for having freshwater lakes (Bandaara Kilhi and Dhadimagu Kilhi), a unique surf break (Tiger Tops), and one of the best places in the world to dive with thresher sharks. The island’s distinct geography and strong local traditions make it one of the most culturally and ecologically unique destinations in the Maldives.
The climate is tropical (28–32°C). The best surf and diving conditions coincide with the southwest monsoon (May–October). The northeast monsoon (December–April) brings calmer seas.

By Plane
The nearest airport is Gan International Airport (GAN) in Addu Atoll. From Gan, a shared speedboat or scheduled ferry connects to Fuvahmulah (1–2 hours). There are also domestic flights from Malé to Fuvahmulah’s own airstrip (FVM) operated by Maldivian and Manta Air.
By Train
By Car / Road
Fuvahmulah has no inter-island road connections. It can only be reached by air or sea. Once on the island, the main transport is on paved roads.
Fuvahmulah is the largest island in the Maldives by land area. Bicycles (US$5–10/day) and motorcycles are the best way to get around. Taxis are available. The island is big enough that walking the entire circumference is impractical — cycling or hiring a scooter is recommended.
Things to do
Bandaara Kilhi (freshwater lake, birdwatching), Dhadimagu Kilhi (second freshwater lake), Fuvahmulah Harbour (known for manta rays and sharks gathering), the southern tip, and the surf break at Tiger Tops.
Surfing at Tiger Tops and other breaks around the island, diving with thresher sharks (Fuvahmulah is one of the few places in the world where threshers are seen year-round), swimming in the freshwater lakes, harbour shark and manta ray feeding, and exploring the island’s unique flora and fauna.
