Why visit?

Sabah is a Malaysian state on the northern portion of Borneo island, known for its stunning natural diversity — from the 4,095-m Mount Kinabalu (the highest peak in Southeast Asia) to pristine coral islands, dense rainforests, and rich indigenous cultures. The state capital is Kota Kinabalu, a modern coastal city. Sabah is famous for its dive sites (Sipadan, Mabul), wildlife (orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants), and adventure tourism (white-water rafting, jungle trekking). The population comprises over 30 ethnic groups including the Kadazan-Dusun, Bajau, Murut, and Chinese communities.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Sabah is during the dry season (March–October). The northeast monsoon (November–February) brings rain to the east coast, while the west coast is wetter May–September. Mount Kinabalu climbing season is year-round but best March–September. The harvest festival (Pesta Kaamatan) in May is the biggest cultural event.

How do you get around?

The Pan Borneo Highway connects major towns. Domestic flights link KK to Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, and Kudat. Buses and minibuses connect most towns. 4WD is recommended for interior destinations (Maliau Basin, Danum Valley). The North Borneo Railway runs from KK to Tenom. Ferries serve the islands from KK, Semporna, and Kudat.

Where should you go?

  • Kota Kinabalu — state capital, gateway to Mount Kinabalu and Tunku Abdul Rahman Park
  • Sandakan — Sepilok Orangutan Centre, Kinabatangan River
  • Semporna — diving gateway to Sipadan, Mabul, and Kapalai
  • Kinabalu Park — UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Kinabalu climb
  • Sipadan — world-class diving
  • Danum Valley — pristine rainforest and wildlife

What should you eat?

Sabahan cuisine features fresh seafood, grilled fish (ikan bakar), hinava (raw fish salad), nasi lemak with sambal, and local favourites like Tuaran mee and sang har mee (river prawn noodles). The local markets offer exotic fruits and traditional snacks.

What is the culture like?

The Kadazan-Dusun Pesta Kaamatan (Harvest Festival, May) is the biggest celebration with traditional dance, food, and the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant. The Regatta Lepa (boat race, April) in Semporna celebrates Bajau culture. The Borneo Jazz Festival (March) in Miri attracts international performers.
